Maintenance is MUCH more cost-efficient and healthy than a dramatic clean-up. Nearly a pickup's load of clippings were removed from this property. (cleanup in Lincoln, NE)
Leaf Clean-up in Lincoln, NE. 1st picture shows leaves blown away from beds and structures, 2nd is mulching leaves with mower, 3rd shows the leaves mulched. This turf would be just fine at this point. The leaves have been reduced from knee deep in several places, down to virtually nothing. The main thing is to get it to a point where the grass can reach the sunlight. The chopped leaves will decompose very quickly, and help improve the quality of the soil. BUT......
..... If you must have that vacuumed appearance, that can easily be done, too. Leaves were mulched, then bagged, then turned into compost at an off-site location for use in future landscaping projects.
This procedure is the most beneficial and effective way to do a leaf cleanup, period. There will be a sufficient amount of tiny leaf particles left in your turf bed to help feed the lawn, but the top, the part that you see, will be very clean.
In addition to improving your soil and feeding the grass naturally, mulching before bagging will GREATLY reduce the amount of material that goes to the landfill. There is a reason why many large municipalities across the US no longer allow leaves to enter the landfill- it is a terrible practice. A Clean Cut Lawn never sends anything to a landfill. All organic materials are either ground into your turf, and left to benefit your property, or taken to a private site for composting and recycling.
The following pictures show an extremely large, multi-acre private property, in which ALL leaves were mulched and left as an organic fertilizer. Not a single leaf was placed in a pile or one of those wasteful paper lawn refuse bags.
